I was excited when I saw that we were reading The Road because it is one of my all time favorite books, especially since I read it back in high school. I still have this problem though that when I read it I get kind of depressed because the tone of the book is depressing. It also freaks me out because it is a situation that could become real one day and I do not know if I would know how to survive. The movie did not reassure me anymore that I could a situation like the either.
Much like you I had previously read this book a few years back for a pleasurable read. At first I didn’t even really know why I liked it so much because it was very slow paced and as you said depressing. The first time I read it I didn’t really get depressed I would say, but more so worried about if something like this really happened (and it could), would I be able to live through it. The thing about the book is that while reading I pictured stuff in my head as it happened, but in the movie it gave me actual images about what it would look like, and I really don’t want to think about the possibility of it happening. Though that isn’t a logical thing to do because it could happen any minute, but I liked both the book and the movie overall. For some reason I was just expecting the movie to be a little more fast paced than it was, and I don’t know why because honestly that’s about how fast everything happened in the book.
At the begining of the year I pretty much signed up fro this class because I had Professor Clark as an 1102 teacher and thought what the heck it can’t be that bad. In the begining of the semester I was a little worried because all the talk about postmodernism, at first, seemed quite difficult to grasp. I wasn’t too sure about all the books we had to read and everything at first either. I mean some of the titles of the books like a visit from the goon squad didn’t sound like something that I would really enjoy reading either. As it turns out though the class was very enjoyable. All the novels we had to read were pretty good in my own opinion, and the only thing that I really didn’t like was the text book. Some of the stories were alright, but a lot of them were excerts and I really wasn’t too sure about what was going on in about half of them. So my mindset quickly changed from being worried to really just liking the class. I learned a lot about postmodernism and some of the aspects that go along with it. I would recommend the class to anyone interested in literature.
This week I was kind of lost on what to write about because we finished the book and about to start watching the movie. In class Prof. Clark discussed briefly about the characters that are in the movie, so I looked them us. Here is a picture of the man (Viggo Mortensen) and the boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee). It is so strange to me that I say this picture and did not really recognize the characters at all if I had not have looked them up by name. The Photo of them together after the movie vs. in the movie is very much different. They almost do not even look like the same people but share the same qualities. And another thing…How can someone starve themselves to look starved the way they do??? I would have to be getting paid A LOT of money…Just saying…Any ideas or comments???
The characters in the picture above really do look rough. I mean in just one picture it pretty much sums up how I would expect the dad and the boy to look. I have heard about actors and actresses do some pretty challenging things for movies. Whether it is just getting extremely ripped to pull off a part or just to not do anything and just gain a few pounds to look a bit heavier. Most of the time movies stars have to do something like that at least once in their career if not more. The part of the movie I’m most excited of is Viggo Mortenson, and although I know him as Aerogorn in the Lord of the RIngs series, I really hope he can pull off a good father. So overall I am really excited to see this movie and I hope that it is just half as good of the book so that I will enjoy it!
Some of you may have read the comic book called the Watchmen created by Alan Moore which was turned into a movie a few years back. I was thinking about what I could possibly write about because I’m really running out of ideas, and then this comic book/movie popped into my head because of a certain post-modern aspect. This book is a deconstructivist comic book because it decontructs the hero. What I mean by that is simply that the story developes its heroes precisely in order to deconstruct the very idea of the hero. Leaving the reader to look at all the different ways/angels that you can see this so-called “Hero” in. Moore does this to ask us a very important question, do we really need heros or would we be better off without them, and that maybe the time has passed for the need of them. Now this is only my opinion about the story, but that is what seemed to be going on to me.
I am really enjoying reading The Road. I think that this is my favorite book out of the books that we read in class. This book is very suspenseful. The way the book is written the things that the boy and his father are doing are really drawn out. Just like what Ms. Clark was talking about in…
I really liked this book too, and it is by far my favorite read out of all of them so far. It was so much easier to follow than a visit from the goon squad because it was so linear. Like you mentioned there are only a couple flashbacks so it doesn’t really make you confused to much during the reading unless you are just half-heartedly looking at the book and pretending to read it. My favorite thing about the book was the suspense in it. It really kept me on the edge of my seat even though I have previously read it there were some parts that still suprised me the second go around. I believe the suspense help me cope with the less intense parts of the book which were every other page something crazy wasn’t going on. The author describes everything so carefully and makes it seem like everything is in slow motion so I really appreciated that he kept my attention by not knowing which obstacle was going to get in the boy and his dad’s way next. Overall this has been my favorite read out of everything postmodern so far.
In the book “The Road,” cannibalism is something that most people took part of after the catostrophic event that happened and ruined the world as we know it. Atleast the way Cormac McCarthy it seems like the world is filled with the “bad guys” who eat other people. Now we kind of talked about this is class on Monday when we first started discussing the book, and well I just wanted to see what everyone else thought, but do you think that you would be capable of eating another living person? Now I know this is a pretty odd question and we wouldn’t really know what we were capable of until the time came, but honestly I really don’t think that I could do anything like that to another person. I think I would be part of the “good guys” who scavenged the earth for remaining food supply kind of like the characters in the book. I feel that my morals would keep me from doing it because truely and honestly its just not the right thing to do if that isn’t obvious enough. Now I really think that I would be able to resist eating someone quite easily, but like I said we wouldn’t really know until the time came, and this is being said with a freshly filled stomach. So would you do what was necessary to survive and take part in it? Or would you be like the good guys?
here is a link to the movie the road which we will view and also read in class. It’s a deep movie and hard to swallow. The crucial things they have to go through is harsh. But it shows how courgeous his father has to be.As a mother I know that parents will do whatever…
Yeah, what the boy and his father in the bookgo through is quite hard to even think about. I couldn’t imagine going through an apocalyptic world where there are humans eating other humans and everything is just in pieces. It would be harder to imagine that let alone with a small child. In the book though it seems like he protects the kid at all costs and does everything. He gives him all his food and the kid has to make sure he eats as well. I think most parents would be like that though, because they wouldn’t want anything to happen to their children and their paternal instincts kick in. I can’t wait to see the movie though to see if they can grab that feeling that the boy and his father share towards eachother.
The picture above is one of the coach Jose Mourinho. Some of you may know who he is, but for those who don’t he is said to be the greatest coach of all time. He has won various league titles, and more importantly champions league titles with teams such as FC Porto, Chelsea, and Inter Milan. The reason he is on my post this week is because of his coaching style. Many people claim that it is postmodern and I really found that to be quite interesting. His style with Inter Milan is what he is most known for. His post-modern version of catenaccio(defensive play) revolutionized the game. Other teams had tried to play with a strong back four but really could never pull it off. Jose was the first to do so with flying colors, mostly because he is obsessed with detail and preparation. The way his teams play defense is unique and unlike any other. Many claim it to be postmodern, but then again he is “The Chosen One.”
So I was thinking of what to write about this week and I have not ever heard of a bathtub in a kitchen. So I used google.com to find an image of it and came up with this picture. It just looks so out of place in a kitchen. Who would have, or even put a bathtub in your kitchen? Maybe it is a symbol? I am really not sure. I think of it quite odd. I would not feel comfortable taking a shower or bath in my kitchen, which could be the reason Sasha showers at the gym.
You know I have wondered about the whole bath tub in the kitchen deal, but I have just failed to look it up thus far. I have to agree with you it really does look quite out of place. I just don’t think that I would like to shower where I cook and eat my meals it just seems a little bit odd. Plus if you had unexpected company and they just came in while you were taking a shower out in the middle of the room that might be a little bit uncomfortable for them and you. Personally I would never put a bathtub in my kitchen because it just doesn’t make sense to me. I was thinking about it in my head when I read that in the book and was just like how odd. But hey, to some people this may be pretty rad.
I have previously posted something about postmodernism in architecture, but this time around I was to see what postmodern furniture would look like. Above is a picture of a table by a Dutch designer named Maarten Baas. Now I was a big fan the the architecture because the buildings were beautiful and unique. Now this on the other hand really doesn’t do it for me. I mean I think I have made something like this before. So really I could be a postmodern designer, but I guess some people are into it otherwise this guy would have to find another occupation.. If you are interested in this though, check out this site http://inhabitat.com/treasure-furniture/. It has more of his work and some other pretty interesting things.
